My husband downloads pod casts for us to listen to together and sometimes that can be a real chore. We have a small set of computer speakers, but the quality of sound from them is a little touch-and-go. I was hoping these speakers would be better, but I never expected them to blow the other speakers out of the water. They were easy to hook up and position – no engineering degree required! – so I was able to set it up quickly and start using them right away. The sound quality is excellent and consistent. Neither of us has had a problem hearing and understanding the hosts of the podcasts, a problem we have frequently had before and attributed to the podcast itself rather than the speakers.
I also tried it out with a little music and found that it works well there too. We set these up in our bedroom about three feet apart and maybe 4-5″ from the wall. The sound quality is excellent and I highly recommend these, especially at this price.
Good choice at this price point****

At first listen, it almost sounds like these speakers have a subwoofer — but alas, they’re just a very decent 2.0 speaker set. I’ve tried some Altecs (now owned by Plantronics) at this price range in the past, but these literally blow these away. The sound produced is clear, and while not that bassy, seems well balanced (unlike the Altecs). You can tell these have 10 watts of power, and it doesn’t matter whether I hook up an iPhone or MacBook Pro into these — any type of music seems to play well. There is no tone control on the speakers themselves — that type of control will need to be made on your output device.
I would, however, expect at this price range an auxiliary input jack and/or replaceable 3.5mm cables (all the cables are fused into the speakers.) This can be easily solved with the appropriate adapters, but I would have expected more at this price. There is an external headphone jack on the right unit, however. On the plus side, they do provide 360ยบ sound as advertised thanks to a speaker driver exposed on the rear of each channel. The volume and power knobs are all in one and is large and wonderfully easy to control.
Despite being marketed for laptops, you probably won’t be lugging these around much — all the parts are still 3 to 4 pounds (including the somewhat of a wall wart AC adapter.) Definitely well suited for your home office / desk / bedroom — and as some other reviewers have suggested, replacing a low-end LCD/Plasma TV’s built-in speakers. A good choice if you’re speakers needs are moderate and this is the price range you’re looking at.
