Tout a 56Kbps top speed over a standard phone line as your solution are Hayes’s Accura 56K Internal Fax modem and 3Com/U.S. Robotics’s Sportster 56K External Fax modem. Each modem adheres to its own 56Kbps standard. to connect to an Internet service provider (ISP) using K56Flex — and vice versa, You can’t use an X2 modem.

In 1998, The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) should issue a uniform 56Kbps standard. The Hayes topped out between 40 and 42Kbps, and The Sportster routinely, connected at 46.9Kbps. A speed you’ll realize only under near-perfect line conditions–In short, the Sportster beat the Accura. Still, these speeds are well below the advertised 56Kbps.

To monitor the performance of our entire communication chain: modem, ISP, the Internet, and remote server, we can used VitalSigns Software’s Net.Medic program, To determine how much we benefitted from these higher-speed modems. compared the results against our trusty Accura 28.8Kbps reference and We down-loaded test files several times with both modems

Obviously, modem speed is only one part of achieving faster Internet performance. Our final test session on America Online (keyword: X2) with K56Flex field test connections and its X2 yielded similar results. Send files to the Internet at a maximum of only 33.6Kbps when Note that all 56K modems receive data from your Internet service provider at the higher speed.

Apple External Modem Review

By Sandy Eggo*****

This modem works great. Total plug and play. Now that some genius at Apple decided we no longer need a phone connector, this really fills the need if you have to send a real fax.

Apple USB modem works great

By Mac User****

This modem worked great out of the box (bag?). I took a chance that this cute little match to my new MacBook w/Intel processor would work well, as the reviews seemed to be 50/50. So far so good. Yes, some of us still have only slow dial-up. The MacBook processor is fast, so surfing is faster than on my G4 tower and its internal modem. Speaking of which, it would’ve been nice if an internal modem had come with MacBook or if the USB type had been half the price, but other than that, no complaints.

easy install, easy setup, slow to negotiate connection, crashed my Mac

By Michael Wilsker***

I purchased this item to use with my 15″ MacBook Pro while traveling in Brazil. Installation was effortless; MacOS 10.5.2 automatically added it as a network interface. Configuration was similar: Simply enter the username, password, phone number. Initially I had issues with the connection dropping every 5-7 mins, and Aqua would freeze, requiring a hard reboot. Searching on Apple’s website (in 5-7 minute blocks) yielded many people complaining of the same problem. I tried a number of solutions, including changing USB ports, unplugging the power, changing phone cables, etc. Some combination of these (I don’t recall exactly which, but I think it was “unplug power and use USB port next to the power connector”) resolved the issue and I was able to connect for several hours without problem.
